Thomas Herbst
Thomas Herbst (1848–1915) was a German Impressionist painter and one of the leading members of the Hamburg School of painting. Born in Hamburg, Herbst studied at the Weimar Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of painters like Theodor Hagen. He was particularly known for his landscapes and animal studies, often depicting the pastoral beauty of the German countryside. Herbst’s style blended the naturalism of the Barbizon school with the looser brushwork and light-filled compositions of the Impressionists.
Herbst exhibited widely throughout Germany, and his works were well-regarded for their sensitivity to light and atmosphere. His legacy as one of the important German painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries endures, with his works housed in collections such as the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
