Simon Denis
Simon Denis (1755–1813) was a Belgian landscape painter who gained prominence for his depictions of Italian scenery, particularly of the Roman Campagna. Born in Antwerp, Denis trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp before traveling to Paris and then to Italy. He eventually settled in Rome, where he became well-known for his plein air studies, which captured the natural light and atmosphere of the Italian countryside. His work reflects the transition from the grandiose style of 18th-century landscape painting to the more naturalistic and expressive approach that became popular in the early 19th century.
Denis’s works were celebrated for their immediacy and freshness, particularly his ability to capture fleeting effects of light and weather. His landscapes influenced other artists of his time, and his works can now be found in several major European museums, including the Louvre and the Museo di Roma.
