Julian Onderdonk
Julian Onderdonk (1882–1922) was an American landscape painter celebrated for his depictions of Texas bluebonnets and the expansive landscapes of his home state. Born in San Antonio, Texas, Onderdonk was the son of artist Robert Jenkins Onderdonk, who initially trained him before he went on to study at the Art Students League of New York under William Merritt Chase. His time in New York exposed him to the broader trends in American Impressionism, which influenced his work.
Onderdonk became known as the "Father of Texas Painting" due to his mastery in capturing the unique light, colors, and vastness of the Texan countryside. His signature bluebonnet landscapes became iconic, and his work was celebrated both regionally and nationally. Today, his paintings are held in collections such as the Dallas Museum of Art and the San Antonio Museum of Art.
