Jozef Mehoffer
Józef Mehoffer (1869–1946) was a Polish artist and a leading figure in the Young Poland movement, which was part of the broader European Symbolist movement. Mehoffer was born in Ropczyce, Poland, and studied at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts before furthering his education in Vienna and Paris. His work is diverse, spanning painting, graphic arts, and stained glass design. Mehoffer was especially renowned for his stained glass windows, most notably his work for St. Nicholas’ Church in Fribourg, Switzerland, which is considered one of the greatest achievements of the medium in the 20th century.
Mehoffer's style is often described as a blend of Symbolism and Art Nouveau, with richly decorative elements and a mystical atmosphere. His influence extended across various media, and he remains one of the most celebrated Polish artists of his time. Today, his works are preserved in institutions such as the National Museum in Kraków and the Museum of Stained Glass in Kraków.
