Emilie Mediz-Pelikan
Emilie Mediz-Pelikan (1861–1908) was an Austrian landscape painter associated with Symbolism and Art Nouveau. Born in Vienna, Mediz-Pelikan studied under the landscape painter Albert Zimmermann. She married fellow artist Karl Mediz, and together they lived and worked in Dresden, Germany, where they became part of the city’s vibrant art scene. Mediz-Pelikan’s work is noted for its dramatic, often dreamlike depictions of nature, imbued with a sense of mystery and emotional depth.
Her work frequently focused on alpine landscapes, forests, and natural settings rendered with a symbolic and sometimes mystical quality. Mediz-Pelikan’s detailed and atmospheric approach to painting made her one of the notable female artists of her time, and her contributions helped shape the landscape of Austrian Symbolist art. Her paintings are held in several Austrian and German collections, including the Belvedere in Vienna.
