Anders Zorn
Anders Zorn (1860–1920) was a Swedish painter, sculptor, and printmaker, widely regarded as one of Sweden's greatest artists and a master of portraiture and genre scenes. Born in Mora, Dalarna, Sweden, Zorn began his artistic education at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm. He initially gained recognition for his watercolors, demonstrating remarkable skill in capturing light, texture, and detail. Zorn later transitioned to oil painting, where he developed his distinctive style, characterized by loose, fluid brushwork, a keen observation of light and shadow, and a strong emphasis on naturalism.
Zorn is best known for his portraits, which include depictions of prominent figures such as U.S. Presidents Grover Cleveland, William H. Taft, and Theodore Roosevelt, as well as members of the European aristocracy and bourgeoisie. His portrait of "Martha Dana" (1899) and "Queen Sophia of Sweden" (1909) exemplify his ability to capture both the physical likeness and psychological presence of his subjects. He was also renowned for his nude studies, such as "The Swan" (1896), where his mastery of rendering the human form and his use of light to create mood and atmosphere are particularly evident.
Zorn’s works extend beyond portraiture to include genre scenes, landscapes, and depictions of Swedish folk life, often focusing on his native region of Dalarna. He traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States, where he exhibited widely and gained international acclaim. Zorn's technical prowess, especially in etching, made him one of the most skilled printmakers of his time, often compared to Rembrandt for his dexterity with light and texture. Today, his works are housed in major museums, including the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. His home in Mora, Sweden, has been turned into the Zorn Museum, dedicated to his life and work.
